Company drops plan to build Nevada medical waste incinerator

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A medical waste disposal company has abandoned plans to build an incinerator in North Las Vegas, officials said.

Stericycle Inc. planned to build an incinerator at Apex Industrial Park to replace a facility north of Salt Lake City that is closing, The Las Vegas Sun reports.

The Illinois-based company wanted to use the new facility to incinerate medical waste shipped from various locations in the West and store the resulting ash.

The company's plan included an incinerator of 44,000 square feet (4,088 square meters) and a 4,500-square-foot (418-square-meter) office building, city records said.

The company dropped its plans due to 'œbroader business considerations and facility planning,'ť Stericycle spokesperson Jennifer Koenig said.

Stericycle sent a letter to the city announcing the withdrawal of the company's application with no further explanation.

The company does not plan to resubmit its request for a special use permit, North Las Vegas spokesperson Sandy Lopez said.
