Indiana University fraternity suspended after assault claim

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Indiana University has suspended a fraternity pending the outcome of an investigation into a fight between some of its members and members of a Jewish fraternity who say they were targeted with racist and anti-Semitic slurs.

Pi Kappa Phi was placed on suspension Sunday, prohibiting its members from hosting or participating in organizational activities while the investigation is ongoing or until the case is resolved, according to The Indianapolis Star.

'œIU Police Department detectives are investigating in consultation with the Monroe County Prosecutor's office and federal partners,'ť the university said in a statement released on its official Twitter account.

The university was alerted about the altercation from a video that began circulating on social media. During what appears to be security footage from outside the fraternity house, several men can be seen attacking one or two others after they look to be thrown out of the house.

University police said a search warrant has been executed and the victims were interviewed.

Pi Kappa Phi said the incident happened 'œduring a university registered event when an uninvited guest started a physical altercation when Pi Kappa Phi members attempted to remove him and his three friends from the house.'ť

Jonathan Pierce, spokesman for Alpha Epsilon Pi, declined to discuss specifics but did confirm two undergraduate members were injured.

'œIndiana University condemns bias or violence in any form and will hold individuals and organizations accountable,'ť the university said its statement. 'œDiversity and inclusion are core values that we expect to be shared by all IU students.'ť
