Game-breaking run sends Streamwood past Elgin

Midway through the second quarter, Streamwood led Elgin 34-29. Then, almost imperceptibly, the lead ballooned to 16 points by halftime.

That lead continued to grow in the second half. The Sabres led by as many as 25 after intermission and went on to beat the Maroons 80-59, in Upstate Eight action at Chesbrough Field House.

Larenzo Coney scored 22 points and grabbed 8 rebounds off the bench for Streamwood (4-4, 2-1). Zach Marquez added 17 points and 7 boards. Kyle Maybrun scored 14, and Jakobe Strong 10 for Streamwood.

With their ability to play fast and make 3-pointers, the Sabres can stretch a lead in a hurry, and they did so again Tuesday, closing the first half on a 13-2 run. Coney scored 6 of those points, including a conventional 3-point play.

After trailing much of the first quarter, the Sabres slowly got going in the second.

"Our pressure got us going a little bit," said Streamwood coach Kent Payne. "And we made some shots. We didn't come out shooting well initially. Then we went to the offensive glass."

Coney, just back after missing time with a finger injury, was still bothered by it, but he didn't let it slow him down.

"Coach told me to keep shooting, so I kept shooting it," he said. "When my shot went off, I started passing it."

Elgin's leading scorer also came off the bench, with Xavier Bonds getting 10 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter.

Jeffery Lomax added 13 points along with 8 rebounds for the Maroons. Darien Jackson just missed a double-double with 9 points and 10 boards.

The Maroons shot the ball well, but were outrebounded 46-38 and committed 24 turnovers.

"We're a team right now that has to value every possession, and right now we're not doing that," said Elgin coach Todd Allen. "It was 3 minutes left in the half and we were right there, and then the wheels fell off."

The Maroons cut Streamwood's lead to 49-35 on a basket by DionT Rodgers shortly after halftime, but could get no closer.

Strong scored for Streamwood. Maybrun stole a pass and fed Coney for a layup, then scored one himself. Marquez buried a 3-pointer and just like that it was 58-35.

Streamwood helped keep Elgin in the game by fouling, but the Maroons couldn't take full advantage. They shot 31 free throws, but made just 17.
