What more does impeachment require?

If the president's withholding foreign aid approved by Congress from an ally at war with an enemy in exchange for information on a domestic political rival is not impeachable, then what is?

Trump and his cohort dangled his willingness to meet with the Ukrainian President as well as military aid, releasing the aid only after he learned of the whistleblower's report. These actions have been confirmed by veteran officials who have served under both parties and offer impeccable credentials.

In addition, the president and his men participated in a cover-up, hiding the transcript in a secure server meant only for top secret files and trying to come up with justifications for withholding the aid after the fact. Impeachment Article Three for Richard Nixon focused on his cover-up of Watergate. The President has also obstructed the inquiry, directing people not protected by executive privilege to ignore subpoenas from House committees, as though Congress were not a co-equal branch of the government.

President Donald Trump has faced no real consequences for an assortment of questionable behaviors, and he keeps escalating them with impunity. Impeaching the president may not be the wisest political move for a Democratic Party determined to win the next election, but it is the right move.

We applaud Rep. Lauren Underwood's support for the impeachment inquiry and we will continue to support her if and when she votes for impeachment. Her courage in such a conservative district, her commitment to do what is right for the country ahead of what is politically expedient, has won our admiration. We hope there are more like her.
