Pedestrian killed on I-294 trying to cross from disabled vehicle to family's car

A 20-year-old downstate resident was killed Friday night on the Tri-State Tollway while trying to cross from a disabled vehicle near the inside lane to waiting family members on the outside lane, authorities said Saturday.

Illinois State Police identified the pedestrian as Rachel Watson of Camargo, south of Champaign. Police said Watson was driving south on I-294 near Franklin Park when the vehicle became disabled and was stopped on the left shoulder of the interstate.

Watson got out of the vehicle and attempted to get to the right shoulder where family members were waiting in another vehicle, police said.

Watson was struck by a Subaru Impreza and pronounced dead at the scene about 8:05 p.m., police said.

An investigation is ongoing.
