Wreaths Across America needs volunteers in Barrington

Members of the Daughters of the American Revolution Signal Hill Chapter in Barrington are looking for community support in an endeavor to honor veterans Saturday.

Volunteers can participate in Wreaths Across America at noon Dec. 14, at Evergreen Cemetery, 600 Dundee Ave., in Barrington. It's one of an estimated 1,600 Wreaths Across America sites nationwide, including several in the suburbs.

Joyce Wright, regent for the Signal Hill Chapter, said at least 400 grave sites for veterans have been identified at Evergreen Cemetery. She recently told the Barrington village board that volunteers are needed to place wreaths at the headstones.

"We are delighted that our Barrington VFW and American Legion posts have offered generous sponsorship, and invite interested members of the community to place one of the wreaths that have been sponsored following a brief memorial service."

Wright said the effort is a chance "to remember the fallen, honor those that served and teach the next generation the value of freedom."

Daughters of the American Revolution Signal Hill Chapter has about 140 members who serve Barrington and surrounding towns. They are of all ages and have verified their lineage to an American Revolutionary patriot.
