Shop with a Cop brings smiles to Round Lake-area kids

The long running Shop With a Cop event hosted Monday by Round Lake Park police provided about 50 kids with a Christmas experience they may not otherwise have had.

Village hall was decorated in a "Polar Express" theme for children selected at the recommendation of local school social workers and nonprofit agencies.

For many of the kids, it was their only opportunity for a holiday, according to Police Chief George Filenko.

The event started at village hall, where all were fed and each child received a pair of mittens and a scarf crafted by the Saddlebrook Knitting Club.

Next, those who wanted were given a ride in a police car to the Walmart store in nearby Round Lake Beach to browse the aisles. The shopping trip was made possible through donations from residents and businesses.
