Toll machines should be replaced

The $76,000, high-tech toll machines that have been recently purchased and added to toll roads should be more condemned than credited. The Daily Herald editorial, "Highway robbery" quotes Marni Pyke's reporting that accentuates the unjust nature of these machines as a whole, and their impact on a driver's journey to a destination. As stated, these touch screen machines accept everything from paper money to coins to credit cards, but no change is offered back to the individual despite the machine's high-tech qualities.

Despite the fact that these new machines seem more efficient when compared to prior toll baskets at first glance, both resources rob drivers of hard-earned money the same.

According to Welfare Info Network, which provides readers information regarding over 600 benefit programs at the state and federal levels, approximately "6.8% of DuPage County residents live in poverty." While that number may strike you as quite low, that is approximately 63,248 individuals within the county alone. Therefore, the inability to these payment machines to offer change back to the driver not only negatively affects all individuals, but more importantly, the poorest individuals on a much larger degree.

After reading this article and growing up in an era of many technological advances, I strongly support the removal of these unethical machines and replacement with more high tech ones that can give hardworking people back the money that they deserve.
