Ela Township honors veterans with annual luncheon

Submitted by Ela Township

On Nov. 11, Ela Township honored local area veterans during their annual Veterans Day Luncheon. More than 30 veterans attended, spanning decades of service and each branch of service. Veterans brought memorabilia and stories to share and participated in a pinning ceremony that honored all military branches. The event included a delicious lunch that was provided by Ela 55+'s on-site chef at the Ela Township Community Center, 380 Surryse Road, Lake Zurich.

A particularly special moment at the event included celebrating the birthday of Army veteran, Ed Berthold, who turned 100 years old in November. Berthold served in World War II as a First Lieutenant and pilot/co-pilot on a B-24 bomber assigned to the 702nd Bomb Squadron. During that time, he successfully completed 35 missions.

Ela Township considers it an honor to serve all veterans that attend the free luncheon every year in recognition of their military service, and Ela 55+ continues to assist veterans and other older adults in the area with their service and numerous program offerings year-round.
