Keep the Wreath Red campaign will start on Thanksgiving in Palatine

Palatine Fire Department officials Monday announced the return of the Keep the Wreath Red campaign for the holidays. Between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day, a wreath will be decorated only in red lights at each of five Palatine fire stations. In the event of a "holiday-related fire," fire officials will exchange a red bulb with a white bulb. Officials urge residents to consider potential fire safety problems, in part, by checking all holiday lighting for wear or damaged wiring and replace as needed, only using indoor/outdoor lighting and extension cords where intended. Also, not placing candles in windows near blinds and curtains, having fireplaces and wood-burning stoves cleaned regularly, and turning off all holiday lighting before leaving or going to bed.
