The Soapbox: Daily Herald editors offer brief thoughts on suburban topics in the news.

Can't have it both ways

President Donald Trump apparently wants the whistleblower and arch-critic Adam Schiff called to testify as part of any impeachment trial in the Senate. Since Trump has refused to honor subpoenas seeking testimony and documents from his aides, shouldn't he waive any rights to demand others to testify?

Battle of the Bulge remembrance

The First Division Museum at Wheaton's Cantigny Park is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. The commemoration of the last major battle of World War II on Europe's Western Front features a new exhibit and several programs. It's a must for history buffs. For details, visit www.FDMuseum.org.

Such a thoughtful thought

Seen on a Schaumburg municipal message board "Gobble, gobble. Go easy on the throttle." So few words, so much wisdom.

Twinkle, twinkle

If you're counting down to the holidays, several impressive suburban outdoor light displays start his weekend, including Santa's Rock N Lights at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Grayslake, Lightscape at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe and Illumination Tree Lights at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle. May your weekend be merry and bright.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

As a young girl, Emilie Lynn shuddered at the thought of singing in front of people. But she grew more comfortable performing at Vernon Hills High School and eventually found herself working professionally. This holiday season, she takes flight in the title role of "Mary Poppins" at Drury Lane Theatre in Oakbrook Terrace. Congrats, Emilie - may your star always burn bright.

Out with the old

There's nothing like a good house cleaning, and that applies to the Bess Bower Dunn Museum in Libertyville. Officials at the Lake County Forest Preserve District plan to sell more than 60 items, including cavalry helmets and a 1928 Ford Model A truck, during a public auction next spring. Anyone need an antique, long-handled scythe?

Sibling rivalry and revelry

We got such a kick out of staff photographer Brian Hill's pictures of Santa with 34 sets of twins Wednesday at Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg. If you look closely at the massive group shot, you can see one toddler yelling as his brother bites his hand. It probably wasn't amusing to their mom, but in time, that will become a favorite family story.

Semifinal Saturday

As the IHSA football playoffs wind down, three local teams will vie today for a spot in state championship games next weekend at Northern Illinois University: Rolling Meadows hosts Nazareth, Willowbrook entertains Mount Carmel and Warren plays host to Brother Rice. Go get 'em, boys!

What leads to the wrong turn?

When tragic scandals bring down prominent pastors - like the one that led to James MacDonald's dismissal from the suburban Harvest Bible Chapel megachurch he founded - we generally assume every minister started out with good intentions only to serve. And we find ourselves wondering: Where was the fork in the road?
