We have lots to learn

In regard to a recent letter by Lanlan Hoo, I almost fully agree, although I would say we live in a kleptocracy more than a plutocracy. The important thing is to not get caught up in nationalistic pride that we are the best country in the world.

We are the wealthiest and probably have the most resources, but we have lots to learn from other countries. Unfortunately, we judge success all too often by wealth and power, ignoring the successful people who live happy, balanced lives throughout all segments of our society.

Having lived in Australia for a brief period, I can say there are certainly some things such as national health care, requirement to vote, a living wage, nearly free higher education that are attractive and financially funded by higher taxes. Yes, we are a great nation, but we could be greater for all Americans if we borrowed some successful ideas from successful countries.

It would mean becoming a democratic socialist society like most other democracies - and that is not socialism, even though that is the political talking point against it. A society that cares for all of its members, will be a successful one.
