Cross country: Rosary's Surtz wins sectional crown

Rosary sophomore Lianna Surtz won the Class 1A Oregon sectional with a time of 18:22.97 Saturday, almost 43 seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Surtz helped the Royals qualify as a team for state by finishing third with 103 points behind Winnebago and Rock Falls. Rockford Christian and Harvest Christian also qualified.

Junior Maia Italia (20:30), sophomore Katie Ubertino (21:06), sophomore Brooke O'Carroll (21:12) and senior Katie Lifka (22:22) rounded out Rosary's top five.

Senior Lydia Camp led fifth-place Harvest Christian by placing 10th in 20:12. Eva Camp and Annika Learned, both freshmen, took 25th and 33rd, respectively.

Aurora Central Catholic senior Lesley Viveros qualified as an individual by finishing 17th in 20:50. The Chargers just missed the fifth spot and a spot at state finishing six points behind Harvest.

Boys race: Harvest Christian scored 43 points to win the sectional title going away, 41 points ahead of Rockford Christian.

Junior Matthew Olech finished third overall in 17:02. Hayden Colclasure was fifth, Daniel Winkelman 11th, Carson Welsh 20th and Cannon Lambert 26th.

Aurora Central Catholic also qualified for state by placing third with 136 points. Tony LoPresti finished first for the Chargers and 15th overall in 17:39 with Sam Woody not far behind in 17:53 for 18th.
