Appalling expenditures

As a taxpayer, I am appalled that Stevenson District 125 is contemplating spending $50 million ("Stevenson expansion tab could run $50M," Oct. 19).

I read the article, but I have seen this story before, and the money winds up being spent more on athletic fields and facilities. Didn't SHS just spend an eight-figure amount on a new weight room? In recent memory, a bond issue saw funds (i.e., tax dollars) go to a new pool and a new performing arts center.

How many students will benefit? I don't mean all those taking phys ed; I mean the real beneficiaries of a remodeled athletic field and renovated locker rooms - the "professional" student athletes playing football, soccer and basketball.

Why not put this money into something fiscally responsible like ensuring a fully funded teachers pension account? I do not want to see my property taxes rise any higher in my old age due to another Stevenson tax increase.
