Indiana dam to get signs warning about dangerous currents

JASPER, Ind. (AP) - A southwestern Indiana city is preparing to install warning signs along a dam to alert boaters and swimmers about dangerous currents.

The Jasper Common Council approved an ordinance last week calling for warning signs to be placed around a dam on the Patoka River.

The (Jasper) Herald reports the signs warning of the dam's drowning risks should go up within six weeks. Jasper is about 40 miles (64 kilometers) northeast of Evansville.

Low-head dams create a circular current at the dam's base that keeps victims trapped beneath the surface until the turbulent water spits them out.

Jasper's safety director, Cale Knies, says the signs are a response to the growing number of people visiting the area where the dam is located.
