Fish story: Forest preserve offers fly tying tips

Visitors can meet some of the area's best fly tyers and watch them demonstrate a variety of fly patterns at the Illinois Smallmouth Alliance Early Show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, at Mayslake Peabody Estate, 1717 W. 31st St. in Oak Brook.

Guest speakers will be professional fly tyer Dennis Potter and Robert Thompson, fly tyer and author of two books on fly fishing, who will give presentations throughout the day.

The show also will feature demonstrations from more than 25 of the area's best fly tyers, free casting lessons from certified casting instructors; spey-casting demonstrations with tips on matching the line to the rod; and sales representatives from pro tyers, fishing guides and shops.

Kids can look through a high-powered microscope to view bugs that fish eat; participate in a free fly-tying program with materials and tools provided; and find out more about forest preserve's outdoor and youth programs.

The program is co-sponsored by the Illinois Smallmouth Alliance and DuPage Rivers Fly Tyers.

Admission is $10; kids 12 and younger are free. Registration is not required. For details, call (630) 206-9566.
