Check out our Daily Herald Suburban Wildlife page on Facebook, www.facebook.com/group/suburbanwildlife/. There, you will find what many people have asked us about: A place to share your neighborhood coyote sightings and other related snapshots.
The group is a place that goes beyond coyotes. Share your photos of wildlife in your own backyards. Offer tips on getting squirrels out of your attic. How do you keep skunks from digging up your yard? And help neighbors identify those strange animal tracks.
We contribute by sharing columns from our wildlife experts, pictures from our talented photographers and other animal stories that lend themselves to this page.
So have some fun, and let's talk Suburban Wildlife ... and there will be a gallery of more pictures at dailyherald.com.
Got to hang out with the whole family (of coyotes) today. All six young ones play-fighting while mom and dad hunted.

(A raccoon) was sitting on my deck eating peanuts ... right on the other side of the glass French doors. I sort of peeked around the side and shot.

Today I saw at least five very active and noisy hummers (ruby-throated hummingbirds) in my backyard in Wheeling.

This is a Coluber constrictor foxii (Blue Racer) - a nonvenomous, native snake. These gorgeous snakes are common in grasslands in the Chicagoland area. Noted for their speed, they actually have a second protective membrane over their eyes to protect them from the sharp grass edges and sticks they may encounter as they race along chasing prey or making a getaway from predators. They're moving toward their overwintering dens as the temps drop, so please keep your eyes open for them and avoid running them over.
