Hainesville to hold annual Civil War event Oct. 19 and 20

Hainesville's annual Civil War Encampment and Battle will be held again this year from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, on the northern part of the Northbrook Sports Club property in Hainesville.

Confederate troops get ready for battle at a previous Civil War Encampment and Battle in Hainesville. The event includes a battle re-enactment, military and civilian encampments, presentations by historical figures, period vendors and music, medical demonstrations and more. This year's event is expected to be even bigger and better than before, with more re-enactors, more horses and cannons, a real narrated battle (The Prelude to Atlanta), additional period musicians, new presenters and souvenir vendors.

Talks will be given by actors portraying President and Mrs. Lincoln, General Ulysses S. Grant, Clara Barton, William Irving Kirk (a southern abolitionist minister) and Elijah Haines (Hainesville's village founder). They, along with Thomas Morris Chester, the only black Civil War correspondent on a major daily newspaper, will be available to mingle and converse with the public. All of the re-enactors have studied the times and the characters they portray, so speaking with them provides a great history lesson and a possible new perspective on the times.

There will also be a guided cooking tour of the various military and civilian encampments, a battlefield surgery demonstration, General Grant's HQs and telegraph office activity, civilian camp music, souvenir and food vendor sales and more.

Admission is free, but there is a charge of $10 cash per vehicle and $5 cash per motorcycle for onsite parking. Additional details such as directions to the site and an annotated map are available on the village website, at www.hainesville.org, under the “Village Information” drop-down menu. Questions and comments can be addressed to the event chairman at trusteegeorgeduberstei@hainesville.org.
