Lake County sheriff warns of phone scam

The Lake County sheriff's office is warning residents about a phone scam in which the call falsely appears to be coming from the sheriff's office.

The scammer is using a spoofed telephone number so that caller ID indicates the call is from the sheriff, officials said. The scammer claims to be calling about a civil matter and states the resident needs to call back at a provided number, which is not associated with the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office says people who receive the call should not call back.
