Getting 'Real ID' a real nightmare

In March, I went to the DMV in Des Plaines. It was time to renew my license. I did so. In May, the new law came out stating that you needed to obtain the Real ID if you fly.

In June, I went to apply for the Real ID. I was told I needed a marriage certificate but all other paperwork was fine. I returned with a marriage certificate and she stated it could not be used as it was a copy. I mailed in for a new certificate.

I returned for the third time and was told that since I had been married twice I needed the (first) marriage certificate. I again sent away for that. The supervisor specifically wrote down "marriage certificate needed from first marriage"on a pass that guaranteed no waiting in the future.

I returned for the fourth time and was told I needed divorce papers. The supervisor who read the pass this time said he could not make out the other supervisor's name who gave me the original information.

My question is: Does anyone at this facility really know what they are doing? Each time I went I was told something different and returned with what was requested. I am a frequent flyer so I felt it was important to have this taken care of.

I am just going to apply for a passport at this point ... Also, I am out $30 (copies) and another $135 (passport).

For what it is worth, I feel citizens should know what a frustrating nightmare this is, dealing with the state of Illinois. I think before anyone attempts this they should call Springfield and get the right answers.

Frustrated in Des Plaines.
