Police: Man damaged gas mains in Bartlett strip mall
A Hoffman Estates man is charged with damaging two gas mains in a Bartlett strip mall and then failing to report what he had done, Bartlett police said Friday.
Randy L. Hamlette, 49, is charged with a misdemeanor for "failure to give information after striking other property," police said.
Police said they were called to the Devon-Prospect Plaza on the 300 block of S. Prospect Ave. around 6 a.m. Sept. 28 to investigate a report that the driver of a vehicle had damaged two gas mains and then fled.
Nicor Gas crews also responded to repair the gas leak and restore service.
Police said their investigation led them to Hamlette, who they say was driving a 2002 Cadillac Deville in reverse in the mall's back parking lot when he struck the mains.
Hamlette was released on a $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear Oct. 28 in Cook County Court in Rolling Meadows.
