Elmhurst Library asking for help with parking crunch
Elmhurst residents can help the environment and their community by walking, riding or sharing their way to the Elmhurst Public Library.
The library is encouraging visitors to find alternative means of reaching the library by handing out magnets or waterproof bike stickers to anyone who arrives without driving in their own car. The items are available at the information desk, while supplies last.
The library welcomes an average of 1,591 people a day, meaning its parking lot is well used. A robust lineup of enriching and inclusive events make the library a destination for connecting and exploring, as well as highly sought-after space to work in study rooms or at quiet tables overlooking Wilder Park.
"In a way, a full parking lot is a great problem to have," Director Mary Beth Harper says. "Our community loves their library and they use it frequently. We are challenging visitors to share rides or use alternative transportation whenever possible."
To address the parking problem, the library has:
• Adjusted public meeting room availability during peak use times.
• Rented 45 additional spots from the neighboring Elmhurst Art Museum.
• Provided material pickup at the drive-up window.
• Offered a drop-off lane on the building's west side.
• Talked to other city stakeholders.
• Supplied a livestream of the parking lot to "check before you visit" at elmlib.org/spotcheck.
• Furnished bike and skateboard racks near both entrances. Bike locks are available for checkout at the drive-up window and checkout desk.
