Body of soldier killed in Vietnam being returned to Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The body of a soldier from Indianapolis killed in Vietnam is returning to his hometown.

The Indiana National Guard says it will receive the body of Army 1st Lt. Alan Jensen Bardach on Thursday afternoon at Indianapolis International Airport. The ceremony is closed to the general public.

The Indianapolis Star reports Bardach was reported missing in a helicopter crash near Dong Ha on Jan. 8, 1968. The Purdue University graduate was officially listed as dead on June 8, 1968.

Graveside services will be held for Bardach at 1 p.m. Saturday at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Since 1985, a joint recovery team of military and civilians from the U.S. and Vietnam have recovered the remains of 727 Americans. More than 1,200 Americans are still unaccounted for in Vietnam.
