Construction worker dies at BP’s NW Indiana oil refinery
WHITING, Ind. (AP) - An accident has killed a construction worker at BP’s sprawling northwestern Indiana oil refinery.
BP says a contract worker was injured Wednesday at its Whiting refinery and later pronounced dead. The company said it’s investigating the accident’s cause, but did not release any details on the accident or how the man died.
BP spokesman Michael Abendoff says the company’s “thoughts go out to his family and co-workers during this difficult time.”
The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports that hundreds of construction workers have been working at the refinery along Lake Michigan about 20 miles (32 kilometers) southeast of Chicago.
They’re building a new $300 million naphtha hydrotreater to meet a federal mandate to reduce the amount of sulfur in gasoline, and performing maintenance work on other machinery at the site.
