Cubs interviews to replace Maddon include 3 internal candidates
David Ross won't be the only internal managerial candidate the Chicago Cubs will interview.
The team said Tuesday that bench coach Mark Loretta and first-base coach Will Venable will interview for the job that became open when Joe Maddon was fired Sunday.
Cubs President Theo Epstein said during Monday's postseason news conference that Ross would be a candidate for the job. Ross was a catcher on the 2016 world championship team. He retired after the Cubs won the World Series and became a special assistant to baseball operations.
Loretta, a graduate of Northwestern University, joined the Cubs this season as Maddon's bench coach. He played in the major leagues from 1995 to 2009 and was a special assistant in the San Diego Padres' front office before joining the Cubs.
Venable has been the Cubs' first-base coach. He joined Maddon's staff in 2018. He was a major league player from 2008 to 2016.
Epstein said interviews will begin next week. The Cubs also will interview candidates from outside the organization.
