Kiwanis learn about accessible swings in St. Charles parks

Laura Rudow, superintendent of parks & planning, and Michael Kies, superintendent of recreation, were guests of the St. Charles Kiwanis Club's weekly meeting Aug. 27 at the Baker Memorial United Methodist Church in St. Charles.

They gave a presentation on the ADA-accessible swings that are currently being installed in St. Charles parks.

The swings are the result of a $10,000 grant from the St. Charles Kiwanis Club's Signature Project. The project's ultimate goal is to have an accessible swing in every city park where a swing set already exists.

Swings have already been installed at River Bend, Renaux Manor and Langum parks, with future installations slated for this year at Delnor, Hunt Club, and a third park to be determined.

Next year will see a wheelchair-accessible swing, the first of its kind in the area, installed at Pottawatomie Park.

"The St. Charles Park District is so appreciative to be chosen as the recipient of the Signature Project," said Laura Rudow, who was instrumental in the coordination of the process. "By adding these accessible swings in playgrounds throughout the community, we are able to further improve the experience of play and inclusivity for all."

The mission of Kiwanis is to serve the world's children, and the Signature Project will be a lasting contribution to that mission. To find out more about Kiwanis, visit kiwanisofstcharles.org.
