Term limits drive is long overdue

I read with great concern that Craig Johnson is funneling some $20,000 to the "Committee to Oppose the Retroactive Term Limits Referendum" which represents almost four times as much as recent donations to the "Concerned Citizens of Elk Grove Village" funding. The latter organization is spearheading the movement to impose term limits to ensure that we can see a broader spectrum of candidates and elected officials within the village.

The fact that someone wants to hold onto their position and power so badly, as indicated by the $20,000 transfer from Craig Johnson's campaign committee, is enough for me to strongly recommend term limits.

This is civic government, and not a business venture and certainly not a club. In order to have a responsible and engaged populace, it's important to support broad civic participation. For the Elk Grove Village board and mayor positions, it's long overdue.

It's also a sad commentary that someone outside of the Elk Grove Village board feels compelled to push for term limits when it should be the board itself that demonstrates responsible leadership and self-imposes term limits.

Term limits are important in any type of government because it ensures that all people are afforded the opportunity to participate in a meaningful way in the leadership and decision processes of their communities. In the case of Elk Grove Village, it should either enact term limits or those elected should gracefully retire from their positions for the good of the community.

But the fact that we are about to see $20,000 worth of reasons against term limits tells us Craig Johnson will not be releasing his power anytime soon.
