Fort Massac State Park encampment planned for October

METROPOLIS, Ill. (AP) - The annual encampment at Fort Massac State Park in southern Illinois will be Oct. 19-20.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Greater Metropolis Convention and Visitors Bureau sponsor the event in Metropolis. It provides visitors with a chance to experience life as it was at Fort Massac during the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Fort Massac was a military outpost along the Ohio River for France, Britain, and the early United States from 1757 to 1814.

The event will be 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 19 and 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Oct. 20.

The festival will feature mock military battles and tactical demonstrations by re-enactors on the Fort Massac grounds. Each day will open with a "Posting of the Colours" and close with a military retreat ceremony.
