Doug Horton named Elgin Riverside Club 2019 Man of the Year

The Elgin Riverside Club recently announced its 2019 Man of the Year - Doug Horton.

Horton has been a member of the Elgin Riverside Club since 1997 and secretary since 2005. He manages the meat raffles, sends the newsletters and weekly e-blasts to the members keeping everyone aware of what is happening at the club.

Horton and Trustee Gerry Werrbach lead the Friday Fish Fry ensuring teams are trained and scheduled during the fall-winter-spring season. Often, you will find him in the kitchen cooking for member meetings, golf outings, and other scheduled events to which the club supplies the food. Horton's volunteer attitude and care for the club is what elevated him to Man of the Year for 2019.

Horton is a longtime resident of the Elgin area graduating from Larkin High School - Class of 1969. After graduation, he attended Elgin Community College. Doug and wife, Sue, raised two children - Justin (wife Katie) and Josh (wife Erin) and have four grandchildren, Ashlyn, Ethan, Malachi and Elijah.

Horton was employed as a carpenter for 40 years before retiring in 2012. He is an active member of Carpenters Local 363, serving as an officer on the executive board for 36 years. Horton now enjoys retirement by traveling, getting together with friends and family, and attending as many of their grandchildren's events as possible.

Outside of work and family, Horton has been active with St. John's Boy Scout Troop for 25 years serving as Scoutmaster for 18 years. He takes pride in being involved in the scouting careers of hundreds of area boys, 76 of which received the rank of Eagle Scout. He received the District Award of Merit, National Presidents Scoutmaster Award and earned Woodbadge in 2003. Both Doug and Sue are involved in the Elgin's Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association volunteering for various police and community activities. They are currently enrolled in the Citizens FBI Academy.

Join the Man of the Year Committee in congratulating Doug on receiving this well deserved honor.

On Saturday, Sept. 21, the club will host the 2019 Man of the Year banquet to celebrate with Horton, his family and friends.
