Two years after Aurora gun thefts, Hanover Park man charged

A Hanover Park man was charged with aggravated possession of stolen firearms for stealing 13 guns from an Aurora store in 2017, authorities said.

On March 27, 2017, Aurora police responded to a break-in at JR Shooting Sports, and Malcom Haynes was identified as a suspect after DNA from the scene was examined, according to a news release Wednesday evening by the DuPage County state's attorney's office

On Monday, DuPage County Circuit Court Judge Anne Celine Walsh issued an arrest warrant for Haynes, 21, of the 2200 block of Wildwood Lane.

Haynes was taken into custody Wednesday morning. Later in the day, Judge Thomas Else set his bail at $250,000, and Haynes must post 10% to be released pending trial.

DuPage County State's Attorney Robert B. Berlin acknowledged the lag time between the robbery and the arrest.

"While it has been quite some time since the alleged break-in, cooperative efforts displayed by all the agencies involved in this case led us to a man who is accused of stealing 13 dangerous weapons, which unfortunately were most likely headed for the streets," Berlin said in the release.

Haynes' next court date is Oct. 7. If convicted, he faces up to 40 years in prison, the news release said.
