Learn about 'Batavia's Only Civil War Doctor' Sept. 16 at Batavia library

Trevor Steinbach, a Civil War medical reenactor, will present "Batavia's Only Civil War Doctor: Dr. Charles A. Bucher," at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave.

Learn how Charles Bucher, a tailor in Batavia, became a Civil War doctor in the 1860s and saved Ernest Hemingway's grandfather. Later he was highly involved in the Batavia community and served the public on the Batavia school board, as president of Batavia, and as Kane County coroner.

The presenter, Trevor Steinbach, lives in Batavia, and is a life member of the Batavia Historical Society. Steinbach has been portraying Civil War medical officers since the early 1990s.

He is a member of the National Society of Civil War Surgeons, which provides seminars/training for medical re-enactors.

Steinbach has presented his medical impressions at over 300 events in Illinois, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Missouri, and Iowa, on an average 18 weekends a year.

The lecture is free; however, registration is required.
