Gilberts sand volleyball court clears plan commission
The owners of Pub 72 Bar & Grill in Gilberts said they are looking forward to installing a sand volleyball court next month, pending final approval by the village board.
The Gilberts plan commission unanimously recommended Wednesday granting a special use permit for the court, which would be built on a grassy lot at the corner of Higgins Road and Railroad Street, down the street from Pub 72 at 38 E. Higgins Road.
Conditions include no music speakers on the court and lights out at 10 p.m., as per the village's noise ordinance. Flame Amur maple trees - whose leaves turn bright red in fall - and boxwood bushes will be planted as landscaping, Pub 72 co-owner Brian Zirlin said.
Village Administrator Brian Bourdeau said the village board might cast a vote at its meeting Tuesday, or later in September.
The plan commission held a public hearing Aug. 14 during which some residents expressed concerns, Bourdeau said. Commissioners asked for additional information and clarification that was presented Wednesday.
"We really wanted to work with the community and make sure we addressed those small concerns and recommendations," Zirlin said.
The other co-owners of the business are Tom Trier and his son, Mike Trier. Tom Trier bought the grassy lot where the sand volleyball court will be, and the adjacent property with a house next to Pub 72. His other son will live in that house, he said.
The three men also own The Evergreen Pub & Grill in St. Charles, where they built a sand volleyball court. Building the one in Gilberts will take no more than two weeks, they said.
"We don't ever assume anything until the ink is dry," Zirlin said, "but we're really happy that it looks like it's is going to be approved by the board."
