A Family-Friendly Korean Thanksgiving Celebration on Sunday, September 15th in Wheeling, Illinois
The community is invited to a Chuseok Celebration on Sunday, September 15, 2019 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Korean Cultural Center of Chicago (KCCOC), which is located at 9930 Capitol Drive in Wheeling, Illinois. Chuseok, which is often referred to as the Korean Thanksgiving, is one of the most important Korean holidays. It takes place on the 15th day of the eighth month on the lunar calendar, so its date on the Gregorian calendar, the calendar Americans generally use, varies. In 2019, the Chuseok holiday will fall on Friday, September 13th.
During Chuseok, Korean families travel to their hometowns, and they hold charye, memorial services during which they offer newly harvested rice, alcohol, and songpyeon, half-moon rice cakes, to their ancestors. After the charye, they enjoy a meal together before going to their families' burial sites to pay their respects by weeding and cleaning the graves. Koreans also visit friends, and they take part in folk activities such as ganggangsullae, a Korean circle dance, and ssireum, Korean style wrestling.
The Korean Cultural Center of Chicago's 2019 Chuseok Celebration will feature an information session, Chuseok foods including the chance to make Korean half-moon cakes, and Chuseok activities such as the Korean circle dance, Korean drumming, tug-of-war, and more!
