Man arrested, charged Sunday in Carpentersville meat cleaver attack

A 48-year-old Carpentersville man is free on bond after being charged with slashing another man's face with a meat cleaver Sunday morning.

Romulo Ramirez Trujillo, of the 200 block of Butte Street, faces felony counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and misdemeanor unlawful use of a weapon after a dispute outside his home, according to police and Kane County court records.

Carpentersville Police Chief Michael Kilbourne said officers responded at 6:24 a.m. to the 100 block of Meadowdale Court and found a man bleeding from "multiple lacerations to his face."

The man told police he was attacked by Ramirez Trujillo, who was armed with a meat cleaver, outside of Ramirez Trujillo's home.

Kilbourne said the man was an invitee at Ramirez Trujillo's home. Kilbourne could not specify what triggered the fight.

Other people were inside the home at the time of the attack, Kilbourne said.

Paramedics took the victim to a hospital and his injuries were not life-threatening, Kilbourne said.

Ramirez Trujillo told authorities he was acting in self-defense after the man attacked him, Kilbourne said.

Ramirez Trujillo was released the Kane County jail Monday after posting 10 percent of his $25,000 bail. He is to have no contact with the victim and is to stay away from the man's residence, court records show.

Ramirez Trujillo is next due in court on Friday and faces a sentence ranging from two to five years in prison if convicted. Probation also is an option.
