Hanover Park man gets 12 years for Mother's Day 2018 home invasion

A Hanover Park man who authorities say entered a Wheeling home on Mother's Day 2018 and brandished a knife at the female residents while insisting someone was trying to kill him was sentenced to 12 years in prison Monday, court records show.

Gregorio Salgado, 45, pleaded guilty to home invasion with a dangerous firearm in exchange for the sentence. He received credit for 456 days in custody.

Prosecutors say an 85-year-old woman and her daughter, who is over 60, were sitting in the family room when Salgado appeared at their unlocked screen door. He entered the home brandishing a butcher knife while repeating "they are going to kill me," authorities said.

The daughter attempted to call 911, according to prosecutors, but the phone didn't work. Instead she picked up her mother's walker and struck Salgado with it, prosecutors said during Salgado's bond hearing last year.

Salgado fled. Police arrived, found him sitting in a vehicle and arrested him a short time later.
