Scouting report: Cubs at Cincinnati Reds

Cubs vs. Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park

TV:

NBC Sports Chicago Thursday, Friday and Sunday; WGN Saturday

Radio:

WSCR 670-AM

Pitching matchups:

The Cubs' Cole Hamels (6-3) vs. Alex Wood (1-0) Thursday at 6:10 p.m.; Yu Darvish (4-5) vs. Trevor Bauer (9-8) Friday at 6:10 p.m.; Kyle Hendricks (8-8) vs. Sonny Gray (5-6) Saturday at 6:10 p.m.; Jon Lester (9-8) vs. Luis Castillo (11-4) Sunday at 12:10 p.m.

At a glance:

The Cubs are 5-7 against the Reds this year, 2-4 in Cincinnati. Hamels returns to Great American Ballpark for the first time since he strained his oblique muscle and went on the injured list in late June. The teams entered Wednesday tied for second in the NL in ERA (4.02), and pitching is what's keeping the Reds (54-58) within striking distance in the NL Central. Bauer was obtained from the Cleveland Indians for Yasiel Puig. With Puig gone, the Reds get most of their offense from Eugenio Suarez, who has a line of .257/.339/.523 with 30 homers and 72 RBI. This is the start of a three-team, four-city road trip for the Cubs, who wind up the journey with an Aug. 18 game against the Pirates in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Next: Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, Tuesday-Thursday
