Stop playing politics with immigration

After reading a recent Daily Herald article by Jim Slusher, it looks like the Herald is looking give readers a better picture of the immigration issue. We seldom see the word "illegal" associated with immigration. If these words were used to focus on issues rather than people, we may get a better understanding of what's happening.

This issue has created a "civil war" in America, constantly being fueled by politicians on both sides. Careers and party appear to be the basis for their motives for supporting or not supporting this issue. They don't seem to be concerned about resolving the issue but rather use immigrants, as pawns, in order to promote the issue.

They have chosen to blame President Donald Trump rather than working to resolve the issue.

First, we should look at the laws that have been on the books, long before Trump took office. They lay out the process for living in America and gaining citizenship.

Next, we need to begin using the word "illegal" or the phrase "those who enter this country illegally." I'm sure most people are not opposed to anyone who enters America legally. I also can't believe that any politician supports people coming here illegally. Likewise, I would expect that those same politicians would openly welcome anyone wanting to come here legally.

Finally, stop blaming Trump and the "other party" and address the issue. Focusing on actions rather than people. Immigrants who are here legally should, in no way, feel threatened by the actions of our government.

I appreciated Slusher's article and hope that someday, the immigration issue will be put behind us and we can work together to become the "United States" once again. This is possible, but we all need to work together for this happen.
