Handcuffed inmate tries to steal patrol car, crashes it

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Evansville police say a handcuffed inmate commandeered a patrol car and crashed it into a hospital's helipad while trying to drive away.

The woman, who suffered minor injuries in Thursday's crash, was captured at the scene at Deaconess Midtown hospital in the southwestern Indiana city.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports that Evansville police officers were transporting two prisoners when they left the patrol car to escort one of those inmates to a transport van.

Police say the remaining inmate then managed to climb into the car's driver's seat despite being handcuffed and put the vehicle in gear.

The car traveled about 100 yards (91 meters) before it slammed into the hospital's helicopter pad.

Police have not released the inmate's name.
