Gilberts man charged with shooting AK-47 into air near tollway
A 24-year-old Gilberts man has been charged with firing 14 shots from an AK-47 rifle into the air near Interstate 90 over the weekend.
Kane County prosecutors say Steven Mendoza, of the 1000 block of Park Court, became upset that people were making noise outside his window early Sunday.
Mendoza is charged with one county of reckless discharge of a firearm, which is a felony.
Prosecutors say Mendoza fired the shots toward Interstate 90 and Route 72 when his neighbors had six to eight visitors in their yard.
According to Gilberts police, the shots were fired about 2 a.m. after Mendoza became upset when he heard giggling outside his window.
No one was injured.
Mendoza's bail was set at $10,000 by Judge Linda Abrahamson. Mendoza has posted the $1,000 bond to be released from the Kane County jail and turned over his firearms to authorities.
Mendoza is next due in court Wednesday and, if convicted, faces a sentence ranging from probation to up to three years in prison.
