A human concern
I was disturbed recently when I read "An appalling comparison" from Bruce Parker, Arlington Heights, who is shocked and appalled at some readers who had the audacity to compare a woman exercising her legal right to free choice to Holocaust victims. The fetus he refers to is a human that can feel pain at a point in its development. When he or she can feel pain is still an open issue but the timeline published by the organization Pro Life Across America is:
18 days - a baby's heart begins to beat.
43 days - a baby's brain coordinates movement.
7 weeks - a baby can hiccup.
9 weeks - a baby has its own unique fingerprints.
10 weeks - a baby can feel/sense comfort or pain.
12 weeks - a baby can suck his/her thumb.
We read, hear or see a lack of respect for human life evidenced every day.
We who consider ourselves "pro-life" are not, as suggested in "An appalling comparison," flaming hypocrites or anti-choice fanatics but people who believe that human life is sacred and should be protected by force of law from conception to natural death.
