Phone app used in multiple thefts at Des Plaines Sam's Club
Three suspects were able to use a phone app 10 times over the course of two days to steal merchandise from the Sam's Club at 101 W. Oakton St. in Des Plaines, police said.
The patrons were able to scan the items they wished to purchase on their cellphones and pay using an attached credit card without ever having to go through a checkout line.
The receipt on their cellphone showed the total number of items that were purchased, which the greeter at the door checked against the cart and the item count on the receipt to make sure they matched, police said.
The offenders used five different memberships and different credit cards on July 18 and 19 to pull off the thefts.
