Cook County Health Reminds Residents to Take Care of Their Hands and Wrists
In today's tech-savvy world, we are constantly typing away, whether it is at a computer, on a tablet or on our phones. What people often fail to realize is the importance of taking breaks to give the structures in our hands and wrists time to relax from repetitive use over extended periods.
This also applies to people with more physically demanding jobs such as construction workers, movers and delivery service workers who are at a higher risk of the condition known as carpal tunnel syndrome.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that affects three and six percent of adults, with women three times more likely to experience it.
Patients will often have symptoms including numbness, tingling and pain in their hand and wrist. Swelling is also common.
Cook County Health wants to remind residents to take breaks from their workstations, stretch and ensure proper body positioning, whether at a computer or lifting heavy items.
If treated before the problem gets too bad, carpal tunnel surgery can be avoided with exercises and physical therapy. If you think you are experiencing more severe hand and wrist problems, speak to your health care professional about the best treatment plan for you.
