No matter the occasion, flowers make it better

"He flourishes like a flower of the field."

As I swung the door open, I noticed a friend standing on the porch holding a vase of flowers. As she stepped over the threshold of the doorway she inquired, "Where would you like me to put these?"

I looked at the peach and white petals on each rose as I pointed to the tabletop and responded, "Place them here, please."

I had lost two family members in a short period of time and my friend was bringing me a personal condolence. Since that time, over the years, I noted she enjoys shopping garage sales and resale shops to find unusual vases. She enjoys filling them with flowers from the local stores and giving them to friends in need of a lift.

Flowers are one of God's beautiful creations. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors and fragrances. At times when we are at a loss for words, flowers can give a sentiment no words can speak. I think that's one of the many reasons God created them.

It doesn't even have to be a bouquet. Whether it be a rose, daisy, or daffodil, one simple bloom of a favorite kind can warm a heart. A rose on your mate's pillow can render an apology or a romantic invitation when you're at a loss for words.

Flowers don't always have to have a romantic connotation to them either. A new mother exhausted from labor and delivery can perk up at a long-stem rose. When stuck inside your house or hospital room with an illness, flowers can bring a change of scenery.

Flowers can be used as a show of appreciation to someone who has helped you in a time of need or done a great job encouraging you. Flowers can add a delicate touch to an apology.

Graduations or other accomplishments can be rewarded with a stunning bouquet. And, as we all have seen, there's nothing like lifting the spirits of someone in grief when you say it with flowers.

I know there are some people who have allergies to such things. I understand, because I have dealt with many of my own. In that case, a flower can be enjoyed in a print or on a picture, or decorative throw. Silk flowers are everlasting and can be just as exquisite when nicely done in an arrangement.

I have a friend who has given me a few silk flower arrangements. I've enjoyed them as much as the real thing.

Flowers in the yard or neighborhood yards can be a delight. I find taking some time to relax and enjoy the landscape throughout the neighborhood and all around is a wonderful way to revive your soul and bring some relaxation.

My favorite use of flowers, however, was when mother would give me a bright pink bouquet of peonies for my birthday each year. When she passed away, I transplanted some of her peonies in my yard so each year when they'd bloom I'd have my special birthday bouquet. It was a memory no money could buy.

Yes, I believe God gave us those special creations so, whatever the occasion, we could say it with flowers.
