Police: Gurnee man charged after crashing into tree while fleeing sheriff's deputy
A Gurnee man faces weapons, drunk driving and other charges after authorities say he crashed his car into as tree Monday while trying to flee from a Lake County sheriff's deputy.
Tyler R. Baumann, 37, of the 6200 block of Formoor Lane, remained in custody at the Lake County jail Tuesday charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding, DUI, unlawful use of a weapon, driving without a valid driver's license and reckless driving.
He was arrested Monday afternoon after a sheriff's deputy served him with an order of protection at his home. At the time, Baumann claimed he did not possess any firearms or ammunition, which is barred under the order of protection, according to the sheriff's office.
A short time later, the deputy was parked nearby completing paperwork when he spotted Baumann drive by. The deputy, knowing Baumann didn't have a valid driver's license, tried to pull him over, but Baumann fled at a high rate of speed, sheriff's police said.
The deputy did not pursue Baumann because of the risk involved in a chase in rush hour traffic, according to the sheriff's office. However, the deputy later found Baumann's vehicle crashed into a tree in area of Hunt Club Road and Dada Drive in Gurnee, authorities said, and Baumann was seen fleeing the vehicle on foot.
Sheriff's police said Deputy Dwight Arrowood released police dog Duke, who aggressively barked at Baumann, leading him to surrender. Deputies later found four firearms in his vehicle, according to the sheriff's office.
Baumann is being held on $30,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday afternoon and faces a maximum one to three years in prison if found guilty of the fleeing charge.
