Taylor YMCA's preschool provides a cornerstone for educational success

The Taylor Family YMCA Early Learning Center aims to nurture and inspire kids to discover their educational potential. The ultimate goal for the YMCA is to have students enter the Elgin Area School District U-46 kindergarten program socially and academically prepared to succeed.

The YMCA's Early Learning Center (Preschool) offers a full-day program for children, age 3 to 5, with the school day running from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays to accommodate working parents, and half-day options for those that need/want a shorter day.

Two-day and three-day options are also available.

The preschool on Van Street is a half-mile away from the Taylor Family YMCA on McLean Boulevard. It can accommodate up to 60 3- and 4-year-olds, and employs six staff members, including bilingual teacher to work with Hispanic families in the community.

According to Adia Walker, preschool director for the YMCA's Early Learning Center, "Less than 2,000 of the 6,000 children, ages 3 and 4, within the U-46 boundaries are being served by public or private preschool classes, so the sooner we can educate and get children learning and developing reading skills, the better off they will be at the higher grade levels."

Registration is currently open for the 2019-20 school year, and space is still available.

The YMCA Early Learning Center work with Illinois Department of Human Services and Department of Children and Family Services to accommodate those children eligible to Child Care Assistance Program, provided by the state of Illinois.

The 2019 school year begins Monday, Aug. 19, and runs through May 2020.
