Ghana joins Cameroon in last 16 at African Cup

SUEZ, Egypt (AP) - Jordan Ayew's splendid solo goal helped Ghana overcome an unimpressive start in the African Cup of Nations to beat Guinea-Bissau 2-0 on Tuesday and win its group.

Ayew broke down the left wing, skipped past a defender and curled a shot into the far top corner to give Ghana the lead in the first minute of the second half. Thomas Partey added a second when he forced in a cross from close range in the 72nd minute, and Ghana secured its first win at the tournament.

The four-time champion began with two unimpressive draws.

Ghana, which was under threat of not qualifying for the last 16, emerged as Group F winner after defending champion Cameroon couldn't beat Benin.

Their 0-0 draw in Ismailia had repercussions for Cameroon beyond the group stage. Finishing second means Cameroon must now play Nigeria in the last 16.

The point also saw Benin through as one of the best third-place teams, the first time the West African nation has made it past the group stage at the African Cup.

The last group will be decided later Tuesday and the round of 16 starts on Friday.
