Man convicted of forcing way into ex's Aurora apartment and attacking her

A 32-year-old Aurora man faces a sentence of at least six years in prison after a jury convicted him this week of forcing his way into his ex-girlfriend's apartment and slamming her to the floor.

A Kane County jury on Tuesday convicted Robert Williams III, whose address is unknown in court records, of felony home invasion and unlawful restraint, along with two counts of misdemeanor domestic battery, after a two-day trial before Judge D.J. Tegeler.

According to prosecutors, Williams forced his way into the woman's apartment on the 400 block of Plum Street on the city's near west side the night of May 11, 2018, slammed her to the floor and threatened to kill her.

The 6-foot-3, 260-pound Williams prevented the woman from moving freely and repeatedly texted her "threatening and intimidating" messages while she was making a police report about the attack, prosecutors said.

"Mr. Williams could not take 'no' for an answer and decided to exercise power and control over this victim," said State's Attorney Joe McMahon in a statement. "I hope this prosecution sends the message that our community has no tolerance for domestic violence, and that our office aggressively prosecutes domestic violence cases."

Home invasion carries a sentence of six to 30 years in prison with no chance of probation and Williams is due for sentencing on Aug. 29.

He has been held at the Kane County since his arrest and his bond was revoked after the guilty verdict.
