Pottawatomie Garden Club names scholarship winners

The Pottawatomie Garden Club has announced the 2019 scholarship recipients for the Erma Bogart Memorial Scholarship.

Each year, the garden club awards a scholarship to a graduate of a St. Charles High School who will be majoring in environmental fields.

This year, the scholarship was awarded to Jacob Alfs, who will major in agribusiness, farm and ranch management at Kansas State University in Manhattan, and Lauren Arbir who attends the University of Missouri majoring in environmental science.

The club meets on the fourth Monday of the month from February to October at the Baker Memorial United Methodist Church in St. Charles. The meetings begin with a social time followed by a short business meeting and a program.

This month's program will feature "The Local Petaler" Jen Turrif demonstrating how to make seasonal wreaths at noon Monday, July 22.

In August, club members will take a field trip by bus to Hornbaker Gardens in Princeton, Ill. Tour the gardens in Bureau County, enjoy a box lunch to eat on-site, and browse plants for purchase for your garden on Monday, Aug. 26.

On Wednesday, Sept. 18, club members will join in the "Planting of the Bridges" at 9 a.m. Help plant the beautiful fall flowers selected for the Main Street and Illinois bridges. Bring your own garden gloves, knee pad and trowel; plants will be provided.

On Monday, Sept. 23, Joyce Basel will offer an informal and fun program on floral arranging with "Beauty on a Budget" at noon.

On Monday, Oct. 21, the club will host the Fall Luncheon at Baker Methodist Church in St. Charles. Doors open at 11:15 a.m. with the member-only luncheon at noon. New and honorary members recognized.

Since 1928, the members of Pottawatomie Garden Club have made St. Charles a more beautiful community. They plant flowers on the Main Street and Illinois bridges, and around the Municipal building each spring and fall; they honor past members with the Memorial Tree Program; and they present an annual Landscape Commendation Award to businesses in the township.

The club also awards an annual scholarship to horticulture students and provides support to gardening and environmental projects in the community. For more information about the club, go to pottagardenclub.org or www.facebook.com/pottagardenclub.
