Golf tip: Curing the putting yips starts with a solid setup
Curing the putting yips can be a daunting task. Many times they are caused by a poor setup from the get-go. This will cause poor stability and balance thus creating a need to "rescue" the stroke with manipulation from your hands and arms. Here are a few things to consider when setting up to the ball to putt.
First, find your balance and stability by closing your eyes when setting up to the ball. This will allow you to realize if your weight and center of gravity are inline and centered.
Too often players are way out on their toes or leaning too far back which will create poor balance and stability through the stroke and cause the above mentioned "rescue." I see many players that blink as they set up to be sure they are in balance and stable.
Next, monitor your grip pressure to be sure it is consistent throughout your putting stroke.
Often, we see players experience a great change in grip pressure especially just prior to impact. Try to feel the putter lightly in your grip and maintain that throughout your putting stroke. This will allow a smooth release and better speed control.
Give these ideas a try next time your putter is giving you trouble.
