Report: Former housing official hasn't paid

CAIRO, Ill. (AP) - A published report says the former director of a southern Illinois housing authority ordered to pay a $500,000 fine for mismanaging public housing funds and program fraud hasn't made a single payment after seven months.

The Southern Illinoisan reports U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth wrote a letter to federal housing officials asking for former Alexander County Housing Authority executive director James Wilson's payment schedule timeline and steps to be taken if he fails to pay.

The penalty is part of a settlement between Wilson and the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.

HUD has accused Wilson and another former local housing official of using agency money for personal travel and gifts and submitting false documentation. The county housing authority has been plagued by mismanagement and other problems.
